New Get a Mac ad interrupts football, doesn't need replay

Was it because I was in a football state of mind? Maybe I was just bitter about the commercial break that airs after the ensuing kick-off, which comes after the commercial break aired after an extra point. It could just be that the New York Giants didn't show up for their first quarter in Tampa Bay this weekend. But Apple's new Get a Mac ad that aired yesterday afternoon during the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs, Referee, was pretty terrible for me.

The ad, which featured Mac, PC, and a supposed NFL referee, tied into the games taking place yesterday. The PC brought the referee to the commercial to make sure Mac "plays fair," citing his boasts that Leopard is "better and faster than Vista." (Mac points out that those were the Wall Street Journal's claims, not his.) The referee then inexplicably starts the clock and then heads back to the video camera to review the claims.

Show the games in high definition

While watching the snowy playoff game at Lambeau Field last Saturday I remarked to my fellow football fans how much fun it would be to see and hear the game in HDTV.On Monday, local media were reporting an increase in the sale of television receivers and attributed it in part to excitement over the Packers appearing in the NFC Championship game today. That underscores my lament of no HDTV from our local Fox affiliate.
While this is no fault of the local staff, the station ownership needs to know how much the 7 Rivers Region wants to enjoy our Packers games in the high definition video and exciting audio that the majority of the country receives.Once you watch football in HDTV, you'll see what I mean. Please join me in writing and calling WLAX-TV so your wishes are passed on to their ownership group.

NFC, AFC games will be bitter

But as far as the NFL is concerned, the storm that blew across the Dakotas and into the Great Lakes region Friday night should provide Championship Game Sunday with plenty of rollercoaster-like thrills and spills.

And even more chills. Unforgiving ones.

Elling's Short Game

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Pardon the choice of words, but the imagery is of their own making.

For Golfweek magazine, the noose tightened on Thursday.

One day after the controversial cover artwork on Golfweek became the hottest topic in golf, a top PGA Tour official said that some of its advertising scheduled to run in the publication might be pulled.

This week's cover image on the magazine is a hangman's noose, a provocative reference to the live comments uttered on the air Jan. 4 by Golf Channel broadcaster Kelly Tilghman, which caused a firestorm in golf circles. Already this week, PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem and PGA of America CEO Joe Steranka have expressed either disappointment or outrage at the decision to feature such a controversial and racially sensitive image on one of the game's largest publications.

UWI at 60 - Its role in nation building

The University of the West Indies officially begins its 60th anniversary celebrations today. Those 60 years were directed at producing a new Caribbean from out of the old. The next 60 years will have to be about producing a global Caribbean and happily the UWI has a strategic plan in place to equip it to do so.

The UWI was a product of many things happening at once - modernisation, decolonisation, regionalisation, and nation building. One of the sins ofcolonialism was that for 300 years the British never saw it fit to build a university in the region. It was only after a series of riots in the 1930s that a British commission realised the need to promote a middle class in preparation for eventual self-government. Before adult suffrage, there was no university in Jamaica. By the start of the new century, almost 15 per cent of Jamaicans had access to tertiary education.

News Minute: Hillary wins Nevada...McCain takes S.C....NFL ...

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - John McCain flies to Florida today hoping to follow-up on his big win yesterday in the South Carolina primary. McCain beat out Mike Huckabee. The Arizona senator is stopping short of calling himself the GOP front-runner, saying he likes to "run from behind."

THE VILLAGES, Fla. (AP) - Republican Rudy Giuliani has been on the ground in Florida for weeks pressing for votes, now he'll have some company. The GOP contenders are converging on the state in anticipation of the crucial January 29th GOP primary. Giuliani says he's been "waiting" to take on the competition.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - TV sitcom star Suzanne Pleshette has died. She was 70. Pleshette played Bob Newhart's wife on "The Bob Newhart Show" in the 1970s. The husky-voiced actress also starred on Broadway and in the movies.

Kansas vs. Virginia Tech

So you can point to our schedule, but we play in the Big 12. That's a damn good conference."

Add in the intrigue of a great Kansas offense facing a great Virginia Tech defense, and this might have makings of a classic.

"They're a solid football team and very well-coached and talented," Beamer said. "They've got all the ingredients."

Kansas' recipe starts with the nation's highest-scoring offense.

Hawaii held that distinction until managing only 10 points against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, so now the Jayhawks - with their 44.3 points-per-game average - are in the top spot, and some of the stats they've put up this year are ridiculous.

Consider this, for starters: Kansas has 64 offensive touchdowns this year, against only 46 punts.
