Affirmative Action for Men

When admissions officers gather to create a freshman class, there is a large elephant in the room, wrote Jennifer Delahunty Britz, in The New York Times last week: the desire to minimize gender imbalance in their classes. Britz, the admissions dean at Kenyon College, wrote that her institution gets far more applications from women than from men and that, as a result, men are "more valued applicants." Britz discussed a female candidate who was considered borderline by the Kenyon team but who — had she been a he — would have been admitted without hesitation.

Hartlines purchase WCLE stations

Littlefield, founders of Faith Memorial Church, who had a profound effect on Hartline, according to attorney and radio talk show host, Jimmy Logan.

"What Steve brings to the station comes from the service mentor he had in his grandfather, M. E. Littlefield. This station has carried on the Empty Stocking Fund and he converted it into the Christmas Party for children here in Bradley County. Steve is a servant and he walks the servant model."

Hartline's experience and perspective in the medium of radio has made him a savvy businessman who realizes, he says, how important it is to appeal to his audience not only with great music but also with personalities that connect with their audience and a rapport that does not irritate.

"Paul said, 'I have become all things to all people.' I feel that I have become that way about this station.

NFC, AFC games will be bitter

But as far as the NFL is concerned, the storm that blew across the Dakotas and into the Great Lakes region Friday night should provide Championship Game Sunday with plenty of rollercoaster-like thrills and spills.

Behind the Edwards Surge: Right Message at the Right Time

Much was made of Illinois Senator Barack Obama's superb speech to a huge crowd of Iowa Democrats at the mid-November Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner in Des Moines. Without a doubt, it helped to propel Obama ahead of New York Senator Hillary Clinton in polls conducted in the weeks after the event.

But Obama's speech in November may not turn out to be the definitional statement of the fight for Iowa.

What could turn out to be the most critical comment of the campaign came from John Edwards in the last debate between the Democratic contenders — and the former senator from North Carolina may well claim the caucus-night victory that is the reward for delivering the right message at the right time.

It wasn't a great rhetorical flourish. It wasn't even a new statement.

Daily Blabber Celebrity Gossip Blog from iVillage Entertainment

In today's Cindy Adams column, the gossip diva reported that a large celeb wedding is set to take place "in the next few minutes" in Lake Como, Italy. She didn't know who would be tying the knot, but that "monsignors and bishoplets are running around acting important and hinting and winking. But saying nothing other than 'It's a big American actor.'" Now let's play a little game, shall we? Let's put on our sleuth caps and try to figure out who's getting hitched. I think the biggest clue here is Lake Como. Georgey Clooney has a fancy shmancy villa there, so I'm going to bet it's one of his friends. (It's certainly isn't him! Mr. Bachelor.) Based on that, here some possibilities:

Brad & Angelina: Brad is pals with GC, and he and Angie are hotter than ever. (Did you see the photo of him babysitting Maddox and Zahara this week?) But she's filming a movie in NYC right now, which leaves little time for wedding plans.
