Prison worker took drugs into jail

She was stopped and searched on October 23, 2006, when a sniffer dog showed an interest in the bag she was carrying. Heroin and cannabis with an estimated value of £21,000 was found inside a coffee jar.

The court was told that rumours about Powell’s relationship with an inmate were circulating in the prison. She said she took the drugs into the jail because she had received a letter threatening exposure.

Simon Drew, for the defence, said that Powell was full of remorse and shame for "this single incident".

Lakers Bryant calm after blowout loss against Spurs

Reflecting on Lakers owner Jerry Buss' decision to trade Shaquille O'Neal in 2004 instead of meeting O'Neal's demands at the time for $30 million-plus annual salary, Jackson said: "Probably I'd say this guy (Buss) would do it nine of out 10 times."

Chris Mihm started, missed all three shots in six minutes and was on the bench in favor of Kwame Brown to start the second half.

Jackson has heard Dennis Rodman is pushing to be hired as a WNBA coach and lent support, saying: "Having him have to explain things and come out of himself and talk is really good."

Oh That George Bush! He Was For The Troops Before He Was Against Them

They include Libya, Iran and Iraq under Saddam.

The administration was unable to explain why it had not acted earlier to object to the provision. Perhaps it's because Harriet Miers is no longer the president's legal counsel.

A deeply embarrassed White House promised that it will work quickly with Congress to restore the dozens of military and veterans provisions in the bill, which got overwhelming bipartisan support, once Congress returns to work in January. The new bill would not, of course, include the terrorist-act provision.

The provision was put into the bill by Senator Frank Lautenberg, the New Jersey Democrat, without public debate, a not unusual occurrance on Capitol Hill. It would help U.S. plaintiffs in lawsuits against Iran and Libya, including relatives of Americans killed in the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983 and in the bombing of a Berlin disco in 1986.

CD Reviews

Perhaps you remember Chingy's '03 party-rap hit Right Thurr. If not, too bad -- you won't find much here to remember him by. The St. Loo rapper's forgettable fourth disc consists mostly of lightweight beats and poppy synth melodies, topped with the ever-mellow Chingy's nasal sing-song vocals and repetitive lyrics. You might not hate it, but there's little to love here eithurr. .

I speculated about the sociological reasons coaches are being ...

First, the illusion of control. Obviously some coaches are better than others – I'd certainly rather be coached by Pete Carroll than Nick Saban. (More on Saban below.) But as sports become ever-more important and ever-more analyzed, there seems an increasing tendency to want to believe that everything on the field happens for a reason. The ball didn't just bounce into some guy's hands, good coaching put the guy into the right position. The receiver didn't just run fast and get open, hours of round-the-clock study enabled the coach to determine precisely what pass pattern to call. It wasn't that the Colts played well Saturday while the Chiefs had an off day, this happened because Tony Dungy did an astonishingly good job of preparing his team using subtle psychological tools plus mega-brilliant game planning, while Herman Edwards did a poor job of preparing his team.

NEWS IN BRIEF

PASSPORTS: No final word yet on when U.S. citizens will need a passport or an as-yet-to-be-created alternative for land and sea border crossings involving Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. But the State Department is preparing now.

As early as next month, department officials will begin accepting applications for a "passport card" that is cheaper and smaller than a passport and good only in the circumstances noted above. The limited-use card, which lasts 10 years, will cost $45 for adults ($25 of that will be waived if you already have a passport, including one up for renewal). Children 16 and younger pay $35 for a five-year card.

And, a reminder: As of Jan. 31, to cross the U.S. border by land or sea into Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Caribbean (except for Puerto Rico and the U.S.
